Privacy Policy

Effective 16 September 2026 Applies to the RoadApp-JA mobile app
Plain-language summary

1. Who we are

RoadApp-JA is operated by O'Brian James, an individual based in Jamaica, as the developer and data controller for the app. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and what your rights are over it.

2. What information we collect

2.1 Account information

Your email address and a password. Your password is never stored in readable form — it's one-way hashed by our authentication provider, and not even we can view it.

2.2 Vehicle and document information

Details you enter or that are auto-read from your documents: vehicle nickname, plate number, make, type/model, year, colour, chassis number, owner's name, and — per document — its type (Registration, Fitness, or Insurance), expiry date, certificate number, policy number, and insurance company name.

2.3 Photos and documents

Photos or PDFs of your registration certificate, fitness certificate, insurance certificate, and vehicle photos that you choose to add.

2.4 Usage and diagnostic information

To fix bugs and understand which features are actually used, we log app crashes and a small set of named events: screen views, and when you log in, sign up, add a vehicle, add a document, or attempt automatic document reading. These events never include your password, document photos, or document contents — only that the action happened.

2.5 Device permissions

Camera and photo library access (to scan or upload documents), and notification permission (to remind you before a document expires).

3. How we use your information

  • To create and secure your account.
  • To store your vehicles and documents so you can view them at any time.
  • To send you reminders before a document expires.
  • To pre-fill document details automatically when you scan a document.
  • To diagnose crashes and improve the app.

We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

4. Automatic document reading (OCR)

When you scan or upload a photo of a document, that image is sent to Google Cloud's Vision API, which returns the text found in the photo. We use that text to guess values like plate number, expiry date, or policy number and pre-fill them for you. This reading is automated and can make mistakes — you should always check every pre-filled field before saving, and correct anything that's wrong.

5. Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers to run the app. Each only receives the specific data it needs to perform its function, and none are permitted to use your data for their own purposes.

We may also disclose information if required to do so by Jamaican law.

6. Where your information is stored

Your data is stored on Supabase's infrastructure, hosted in the United States (us-east-1 region). By using the app, you consent to this transfer and storage of your information outside Jamaica.

7. How we protect your information

  • Database access rules ensure your vehicles and documents are only ever visible to your own account — not to other users, and not browsable by us through the app itself.
  • Passwords are one-way hashed, never stored in plain text.
  • Document photos are kept in a private file store, not publicly accessible.
  • Data is encrypted in transit between the app and our service providers.

No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security of your information.

8. How long we keep your information

We keep your account and its data for as long as your account exists. If you delete a vehicle, its documents and photos are deleted along with it. If you delete your account, all associated data is deleted, other than what we're required to retain by law.

9. Your rights

Under Jamaica's Data Protection Act, you have the right to access, correct, and delete your personal data.

  • Access and correction: everything the app holds about your vehicles is visible and editable directly in the app.
  • Deleting a vehicle: available directly in the app, at any time.
  • Deleting your whole account: email us at the address below and we'll delete your account and all associated data.

10. Children's privacy

RoadApp-JA is not intended for anyone under 18. We don't knowingly collect information from children.

11. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the effective date above and notify you within the app.
